Hooray for Holidays!

I’ve been a little bit busy lately.

Busy planning a holiday.

Where, you ask?

This might give you a hint:

new-zealand-map.jpeg

I’m going to New Zealand! Woohoo!

You know, Lord of the Rings country, and all that…

All expenses paid, no less. My mother has just emerged from a 3 year relationship and one of her funny little “end-of-the relationship” quirks, is that she likes to go on holiday…. and I reap all the benefits! Muahahaha!

The flights are free, thanks to the QANTAS Frequent Flyer programme, and all my accomodation and car hire is paid for. For 9 days. Not bad, huh?

We’re doing a self-drive trip around the South Island, which is mostly Alpine landscape and made up of lovely things like this:

Fox Glacier

The only downside (possibly apart from spending 9 days in planes and cars with my mother, which is fraught with potential disaster in itself), is that we have to catch no less than SEVEN connecting flights in total, there and back. Crikey Moses.

I think it will be worth it.

All the planning and itinerary is up to me, as I’m quite good at that kind of thing, so I’ve been scouring the intertubes and holiday brochures for ideas. I think I’ve got it sorted. I’m talking scenic flights, sailing down the fjord (otherwise known as Milford Sound) and getting up close and personal with glaciers. Not to mention the jetboats…

Less the flying time, we’ll have 6 nights to cover the South Island. I think we can just about do it.

Being a bit of a photography nut, I’m so excited about the potential for lovely images, I can’t even tell you.

So, there will be a lot of this:

And possibly not so much of this:

Or, this…

Meaning, obviously, that I won’t be flinging myself across ravines. Although if anyone is kind enough to provide me with a lovely photo opporunity, I’ll be ever so grateful. :D

We’re flying out on October 16. I can’t wait.

Get ready for copious numbers of highly self indulgent, yet beautiful photographs.

In the words of the immortal Big Kev, “I’m excited!!”

    Hooray New Zealand!
    Hooray Sufjan!

  2. modobs Says:

Enjoy your holidays there, my dear! New Zealand seems really really nice. I should convince my man to go there.
My Bloody Valentine? Are you turning emo? Kidding, kidding! I’ve downloaded recently some songs from My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy….

  3. Vanessa Says:

    Brian – Yay for hooray!

(turns out I did know Sufjan after all, but I just didn’t know it… ;) )

modobs – Hey! Don’t diss MBV, man! Anyway, MBV have not much in common with emo bands…. are you sure you’re not thinking of someone else? MBV are an early ’90’s British band from the shoegazing era….

Oh, New Zealand is going to be joy! I can’t wait. My shutter finger is getting mighty itchy…. :D

  4. D. Peace Says:

modobs might be thinking of Bullet For My Valentine?

Am I imagining things or does the word “emo” get thrown around a lot? I have no idea what it means anymore…. MCR is emo? I’m confused… if only I had the powerful genre-naming skills of a SPIN Magazine editor. They can name genres with the best of them.

New Zealand sounds excellent. :) I hope you really let your photography impulse take over. That will be the only salve after enduring the ungodly amount of flight time necessary to get there. You’re going to be jet-lagged. But I’m sure it will be a lot of fun. :)

Don’t forget: http://www.hobbitontours.com. You know you wanna ;)

And your Photoshop skills are impeccable. You are a cartographer at heart. ;)

  5. modobs Says:

Oh, damn, I was thinking indeed of Bullet for My Valentine, thanks D. Peace! And sorry for the confusion

  6. D. Peace Says:

modobs – No need to apologize. :)

I think the word “emo” is (to no fault of your own, or any other single person) being used so much that it’s lost meaning, if it had any to begin with. Much in the way “punk” describes about a dozen smaller, sub-genres, emo can mean everything from AFI to Thursday to Jawbreaker to Pinkerton-era Weezer. It’s just all over the place and I don’t know what the one definition is.

This is why I hate genre-naming. It’s impossible and largely pointless. Plus, it confuses me and makes me wonder how anal you have to be to become a music critic.

When I hear “emo” I think of Chris Carrabba. THAT’S fucking emo.

No, wait. That’s not emo. THIS is emo.

Damn. What a horrible conversation drift. Back to the topic at hand: You ARE going to visit Hobitton, right?

  7. Vanessa Says:

Ah, well I’m glad we got that sorted. I mean, shoegazers were a bunch of wankers for the most part, but they’re certainly not in the same box as the emo brigade. Speaking of which, you are so right, D, about the whole emo thing being quite confusing. It’s more an image thing, than what the music sounds like, isn’t it?

The whole genre thing just does my head in most of the time… and as time goes on there are more and more, and more genres to add to the mix, so it’s become ridiculous. When people ask me what kind of music I like, I never mention a genre. That to me, is anti-music. How can you say that you blindly like everything in a genre? Are you actually listening to the music at all? Ugh.

Egads. That Emo Phillips character looks like Pee Wee Herman’s long lost emo cousin…

Gaddamit! I want to go to Hobbiton! I’m all sulky now because it’s on the North Island and I’m going to the South Island… wahhh…

PS – I gave up on photoshop and went with MS Paint for that one. Bloody photoshop! It is rather good though, don’t you think? I may have found my new calling…

  8. D. Peace Says:

Vanessa – Yeah, genre-naming seems to always be more about style than music. Band X dresses like Band Y, so they get lumped together, despite sounding nothing alike.

And it is anti-music to listen to something for superficial reasons, or to follow a scene instead of something that sounds good.

If I found out I were going to NZ but I couldn’t see Hobbiton, I would be pissed, too. If I were you, I would kick and scream and throw a fit, demanding to see Hobbiton or else I’d hold my breath until my face turned blue and I died.

And the MS Paint-retouched map is outstanding… the smiley face made it for me… ;)

  9. Jules Says:

I am so excited for you and your holiday. Yay! :-D

Why so many flights? I would have thought that you could fly directly from Perth to NZ, or are they domestic flights within NZ itself?

  10. Vanessa Says:

There are two NZ domestic flights and there are so many others, mainly because we are all flying on Frequent Flyers, and you just have to take whatever you can get. Also, Qantas don’t fly direct to NZ from Perth, so there was always going to be at least one stop. It’s cool though, we get to go for lunch in Sydney because we have 6 hours between flights… :) On the way back, we fly from Christchurch to Auckland, then to Sydney, down to Melbourne and back to Perth. Ahh! Hooray for iPods…

  11. Jules Says:

Ahh, what a pity Brissie wasn’t on the itinerary somewhere, even if it was just for an hour or two….

  12. Vanessa Says:

    Yes :(

I am lamenting. Let us lament. I’ll find a way to get there one day, I swear it…

  13. Stiletto Says:

Oh my god, those pictures are absolutely beautiful! HAVE FUN!

  14. Vanessa Says:

    I WILL! :D

    Thanks sweets. I can’t wait…

  15. scandalouscandice Says:

I expect lots of pictures. I really want to see New Zealand. When I go back to Oz, I am planning a stop in NZ as well. But I will be in Germany in November and we are leaving the country in December again. We were planning on Thailand but might spend the time in the country. If we don’t find a good price on out of the country travel we were looking in to a winter cabin in Tahoe or Las Vegas in a penthouse. I am psyched for the holiday season.

Speaking of travel. A friend of mine named Denis, whom we stayed with in OZ has recently moved back to the states. He and his fiancee took a back packing tour through Europe. He has some really great pictures of Italy, the Alps, Germany… It’s amazing. Check out his blog here. And on his categories check out The Big Trip. He has about 53 entries. I think you would enjoy it and his style of blogging.
