Yacht Rock to the rescue

(previous text deleted due to reasonable fear)

****************

I know a little something that might cheer me up.

Yacht Rock.

Yes! That’s the answer!

Never heard of Yacht Rock? It’s an internet tv show and a fictional satire about the lives and times of the big players in soft rock from the late ’70’s and early ’80’s. Think, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, The Eagles, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Toto etc.

Yacht Rock makes me laugh in watery ways, although I seem to laugh at different things than most of the people who commented on YouTube – go figure. It’s ridiculously stupid and deceptively clever, riddled with more pop references than you can shake a stick at, and shot like a really cheap porno minus the sex.

Thre are 10, 5 minute episodes and I’m thinking I might post them all here as a series in weekly installments.

In Episode One, we learn the origin of the mother of all Yacht Rock songs. I will never hear What A Fool Believes in quite the same way again, heh…

Teehee!

Viva le Yacht Rock!

Ah, I feel better already.

Coming in Episode Two: Hall and Oates challenge Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald to a songwriting duel.

Can you back up that statement with concrete evidence? There are about three billion of us out there. Some of us are even OK.

i like your vinyl beauties post, vanessa. i wish my collection had anything so bizarre. closest might be a few 45s from my punk phase, joey sh*thead and the DOAs, the pointed sticks… i do have the official charles and diana wedding album, a classic of kitsch and misplaced intentions with a surprisingly stirring rendition of God Bless the Old Bat

Oh marriage that beast. The best thing I can do is give you no advice at all. Don’t ruin yourself in it. Be very kind to yourself.
OK sometimes you want to take people you know and tie them to a chair and pin open their eye lids and make them watch a funny You Tube movie…… I swear I would pay my sister just to make sure she watches this. It’s Napolean Dynomite in the music world……

Letters: Heh, that’s one of a few vinyl beauties to come. I’m glad you appreciate the pure cheese. 🙂 THE OFFICIAL CHARLES AND DIANA WEDDING ALBUM? Oh, that’s just special. What on earth is on it? Hymns and things, I suppose…. HAHAH God bless the old bat. Perfect. Is punk really that bizarre? I still listen to it….

Jennifer: You watched it!! Oh, I’m all a bit excited now. I rarely watch youtube posts, so I didn’t have big expectations posting this…. but I knew at least one person would see the joy. Hah! It is a bit Napoleon Dynamite, isn’t it?

    … and thanks.

    Tommy: 🙂

*hugs* Hope you got through the anniversary without too many tears and unhappiness. I know it’s especially hard to deal with on these so called occasions… I know how you feel babe, you know I know, and the sad thing is that I don’t even have anything encouraging to say about it, *sigh* thank God for distractions, like Yacht Rock!Hehehe, had a good chuckle there, I think I might watch it again when I’m done here. Trust you to come up with such a gem! Looking forward to the next ones. I’ll stop myself from going to search for them right now, I like it better when you post them.

Jennifer: I got yer video, missus…

Jules: Ah, I’ve missed you again! Hurry up and finish school holidays! Hey, maybe we should shift over to email after all. Hmm.

I know you know. You know I know you know. I could go on. The day has just begun (just got to work), and as predicted he has forgotten. No surprises there. Mum is being a right pain in the arse. I feel this might not be the greatest day on earth, but it’s just one day, right? Others have made me smile already this morning, including you my dear.

And I always have Yacht Rock. Hah! Yay! It’s worth a second look. I pick up something new every time I look at it. Gotta love that montage… and the lightbulb moment. Yes, Wait! I shall post them just for you! The songwriting duel in the next episode is action packed, yet smooth………..

The holidays are finally over! Woot! Kids went back today…

What an idiot, I got the day wrong, I thought I’d missed your anniversary, but it’s today. Well I hope it doesn’t turn out too bad for you and your Mum eases off a bit, sheesh…

Yes, the montage, and the lighbulb moment – classic! Oh, and I’m thinking of making myself a music nook, heh.

  14. Vanessa said,

    April 17, 2007 at 2:57 am

I want a music nook! Just like that. Except without the Jim Morrison poster. I fucking hate Jim Morrison posters.

Yay for the end of holidays. Now, back to life… heh. Where were we?

Michael McDonald is my favourite… but what the hell is with Hall and Oates? Especially Hall…. looks nothing like him! Oates makes me giggle though. He shouldn’t, but he does.

  15. Jules said,

    April 17, 2007 at 3:15 am

Poor Michael McDonald. The pressure he’s under! “This is gettin too real… this is gonna be me, I know it.” Hehe. Thank goodness it all turns out well in the end…

I know what you mean about Oates. I love the look he gives at the end, when the screen splits up into four.

It’s like there are only about 5 Jim Morrison posters, I don’t think he really suits the music nook anyway.

  16. Vanessa said,

    April 17, 2007 at 3:51 am

Hah! The look and the hiss.

I think Michael has some challenges ahead of him yet. It’s not easy for a such a smooth ‘artist’ as him.

You’re right. Jim is way out of place in the nook. Far too obvious.

  17. Jules said,

    April 17, 2007 at 4:24 am

Hah! The hiss!!! Fuck, I have watched that clip too many times now today…..

    I think I’m heading into double figures….

  19. Jules said,

    Hah, you and me both!

  20. Vanessa said,

How long am I going to have to wait to post the next episode?

    Tell me. How long.

    Must……. have…… more…… yacht….. rock…..

  21. Jules said,

    April 17, 2007 at 4:46 am

Hahahaha, I was thinking the same thing. I want the next one!!! Then again is it wise to give in to our wants? We do have addictive personalities you know. I’m already starting to worry about what will happen after I’ve seen episode 10…what then? Then you’ll have to come up with something else… you’ll be sitting with your head in your hands like Michael McDonald. I may just get agro like Skunk. Our lives will have BECOME a parody of yacht rock!

  22. Vanessa said,

    April 17, 2007 at 4:56 am

Hahahahahaha. A parody of a parody. That’d be right.

I don’t wanna end up like Messina. “Fuck you, Loggins!!” Puking into the gutter. Nothing left to give…

I’d better start sourcing something to match it with real fast, or I’m gonna get thrown out of the band!

I’ll see if I can hold out for at least a couple of days. Maybe. Maybe……

Ahh Vanessa, I am so sorry that you are melancholy. I was there for many years. I did the same thing you did, cry a little and then find something to laugh my ass off about. HA! Works for some. You are a bright spirit love! Hope the day went better than you had expected! HUGS DEAR!!

  24. Vanessa said,

    April 18, 2007 at 8:01 am

Hey, no worries love. I’m over it now. It was a momentary … er, moment, partly egged on by good ol’ PMS. Yay for PMS! hehe.

The laughter did help, indeed! All you need sometimes is something to distract you from your own headspace…

And you know what? The day did go way better than expected – even though it was nothing to do with that stinking anniversary.. Woo!
